Programs Descriptions, PowerPoint Presentation and Policy Changes:
Fall 08 – September 08 thru January 09
Semester Policy Changes
Effective September 2008, the
following changes will be added to the existing requirements and regulations.
1. Early morning
classes (6am) will not be available.
2. All students must
take Practicum the first term they attend the Health Training Center (HTC). Students can test out by taking a short quiz at
one of their first classes. The 12
minute exam is usually given at the first Practicum class.
3. If you are taking Phlebotomy
or Cardio-Phlebotomy, you would take Phlebotomy and the Practicum the first
term you are at the HTC. You may add
other classes to these two during the first or second term in the following
order, add: EKG, Medical Terminology, or
Clinical Medical Assisting Techniques.
If doing the Medical Assistant Certificate in 2 or more terms, start
with Phlebotomy and the Practicum, then add Medical Terminology, then EKG and
finally Clinical Medical Assisting Techniques.
4. The Medical
Terminology course is required for all Medical Assistant Certificate students
who begin taking classes after September
1, 2008. It will continue to
be required for Medical Billing and Coding students.
5. If you are taking
the Phlebotomy or Clinical Medical Assisting Techniques classes, 2 hours each
week are set aside for supervised study, tutoring and for small study groups
and review groups. Teachers in both of
these courses can assist you with any course they are able to tutor you in, not
just the course you are taking.
6. All classes last
15 weeks.
7. Medical
Terminology meets 3 hours per week, Practicum is 2.5 hours each week and EKG is
2 hours per week.
8. The Medical
Billing and Coding course may be added to the Medical Assistant Certificate to
obtain a dual major. This would require
a minimum of 2 terms to complete and would require either 2 separate
Internships (160 hours for Medical Assisting and 120 hours for Medical Billing
& Coding) or 1 combined Internship for 280 hours.
9. When signing up
for the 5 courses in the Medial Assistant Certificate in one term, or when
combining the Medical Assistant and Medical Insurance Billing and Coding
Certificates for a dual major, you must speak (call 888.868.2111 ext# 101) with
a HTC advisor before submitting a Registration Form.
10. It is not possible to do the whole Medical Assistant
Certificate in 1 term at night or on the weekends, unless someone takes at
least 1 course during the mornings or on weekends if they are taking most of
the classes at night, or test out of 1 or more.
If a student is doing weekend classes they’d have to test out or take at
least 1 course at night or during the day.
Most importantly, most people taking classes at night or weekends most
likely should not be doing all 5 courses in 1 term because they are working or
have family responsibilities, which probably means they don’t have time to
study as well as take 4 or 5 classes in 1 term.
